In memory of the backroom staff

A moving piece from the Tamensian magazine of 1967 that celebrated the life of Reg Cadle, who was Caretaker at the school and died that year, but which is timeless – even now this is what Wally and the team get up to once all the students leave for the holidays. (Who would know that Wally on the day after the 2014 Awards evening was sorting out a bad water leak over the hall):

‘Jesu Redemptor Omninum’…
The National Anthem…
Three Cheers for the holiday..the hall empties…boarders rush for trunks, find parents, look for cars…day boys’ cycles clash…’Mind the road.’
A minute, half an hour, the School has died…and all is quite. But is it? Tap…tap…swish…Reg comes through the Hall…what a mess…what a jon…a mere four weeks or is it eight? ‘All to myself now…I’ll start…empty this waste bin, close that door, turn off the light…a lot to do but I’ll get through it.’
‘Well that’s one week gone…the floor looks fine…now I’ll do the labs and then the lavatories. Perhaps I’ll pop some plants in now…and then some tea. Sixth form common room will take a day…I’ll leave the showers for now and sweep the quad; these leaves…they do come you know.’
‘Oh well another day…must order oil, soap, towels and Ajax too…times getting on they’ll soon be back…good morning sir, lovely day…have you been away?…your mails upstairs…goodbye…two more days…’
Better do the stage and library now…there’s a pile to burn and four odd shoes…the times do fly…boarders return…unlock the doors and check round…yes it looks quite fair…it’ll do.’
Many new faces…lost little boys…staff changes too – what’s his names? Term again and off we go…creosote those weeds, empty that bin, turn on the pipes – this place must live.’
